about

Stats have been pop musicians, teachers, film composers, dads, actors, waiters, coders, market traders, aides, data entryists, washers-up, tour guides, writers, underwriters, transcribers, you name it.

Everyone feels like a temp sometimes, and the world seems fragile and precarious: this is what these songs are about.

‘King of the Ring Road’ is about our future on the periphery, after the cities wall themselves in and the shopping centres are all empty.

‘Private Party’ is about the rich.

‘Golden Age’ is about how the present is better than the past.

‘Own It’ is about buildings and how they tower above us.

‘Me and Your Mother’ is an apology to a baby that won’t be born.

‘Sometimes I Feel So Thin’ is about living in your own skin, which is sometimes difficult.

‘Near Mrs’ is a love song about failing to read the signs.

‘No One Knows Anything Really’ is about symbols and kisses.

‘Progress’ is about a child impatient to get out into the world.

We are Stats and we are Temping.

Track Name: King of the Ring Road
I'm gonna be king of the ring road

I'm gonna make it out on the ring road
I'm gonna live in an abandoned mall
Everything happens on the edge of town now
Nothing happens in the middle at all

We're gonna party in the empty sheds
Where there's nobody to shut you down
No one complains out on the ring road
No one calls the council round, oh no

Come out to the old self-storage
There's a million rooms to live in
You can make a garden in the retail park
You won't be overshadowed by tall buildings

I'm gonna be king of the ring road.
Track Name: Private Party
This is a private party
Private party
Put your hands in the air
Get down on the ground

The client will not be revealed by name
The client will not be present
The client will not be looked in the eye
The client will not be taking questions at this time

The client will not be revealed by name
The client will not be present
The client will review every application personally
The client is taking an active interest
The client has specifically requested you
The client appreciates your discretion
But the client has specified no phones
And the client is looking in your direction

This is a private party
Private party
Put your hands in the air
Up against the wall

The client needs you at the pickup point at six
The client needs you to be there on time
The client cannot wait for you
The client will not be taking questions at this time, oh no

This is a private party
Private party
Put your hands in the air
Get down on the ground.
Track Name: Golden Age
This is a golden age
This is a golden age
But don't worry if you missed it
There'll be another in a minute
And all the people say

This is a golden age
Don't worry if you missed it
There'll be another in a minute
Get everybody in it
It's momentary, not infinite

And all the people said
What a time to be alive
They prized their luck
They knew they were alive

This is a golden age
Don't worry if you missed it
There'll be another in a minute
Get everybody in it
It's momentary. not infinite

This is a golden age
It's as good a time as any
It's always temporary
Blink and you could miss it
It's momentary, not infinite

Whose was it?
When was it?
Was that it?
I think I missed it.
Track Name: Own It
People shouldn't live so high up
This building is too tall
You get funny ideas
When everything you see is so small

They say, "Why don't you get a job
If you're needing to earn?"
It's good to take advice
But it's better to learn

And everything will be fine
When I own a building
All you have to do
Is own a building
You don't have to think twice
When you own a building
You just count the years
When you own a building

I'm making lists now
I'm ticking things off
I'm so far ahead
That I'm way behind

I see the limit
But I never reach it
You can always approach
But you will never arrive

And all I have to do
Is own a building
The world comes to you
When you own a building
You have a sense of time
When you own a building
And everything will be mine
When I own a building
Yes
The world owes you a living
When you own a building
I'll need your signature
When I own a building
Here, here, and here

Own it
Own it
Own it
Own it

And everything will be fine
And everything will be mine
The world comes to you
It's all you have to do.
Track Name: Me & Your Mother
I'm sorry, kid
It's a really bad time
You might have your life
But I've still got mine

And me and your mum
We both agree
It's the wrong time for her
And the wrong time for me

But I still love you
She still loves you

I'm told that right now
You're just replicating cells
No central nervous system
And no sense of self

I'm sure that's true
It had better be
I'm going to miss you
But you won't miss me

I still love you
Wherever you are
I still love you
Whatever you are

What you must understand
About me and your mother
Is that we both love you
More than we do each other

And there isn't a chance, child
That we could make you a home
We haven't the money
And you can't stand alone

As for the rest
The world you're denied
Well maybe I can explain
Some other time.
Track Name: Sometimes I Feel So Thin
Sometimes I feel so thin
Sometimes I feel so nice
Just like flesh and bone

In the middle of the night
In the middle of the floor
When we're bodies in the dark
And we forgot what we came here for
Well, that's when I'm living in my skin
And I don't feel so thin
No, I feel so good
In my flesh and breath and bone, sing it

Sometimes I feel so thin
Sometimes I feel so nice
That's when I'm just like flesh and bone

In the middle of the day
In the river of noise
Crossing a motorway bridge
Drowning out our voices
Well, that's when I'm living in my skin
In the whipping of the wind
And you feel so good to me
In your flesh and breath and bone, sing it.
Track Name: Near Mrs
Signs to tell you when to walk
Signs to tell you when not to
Signs to say where yous mustn't park
Signs to say where you've got to
Signs all in the same language
Signs that you don't understand
Signs are giving conflicting information
Signs only right as things stand

Near miss
Or near mrs
Is this love
Is that what this is
Near miss
Or near mister
How would you know
How would you know if you missed it?

Signs on the way into work
Signs all over the place
Signs are doing someone else's bidding
Signs refereeing the race

Near miss
Or near mrs
Is this love
Is that what this is
Near miss
Or near mister
How would you know
How would you know if you missed it?
Track Name: No One Knows Anything Really
This is the cymbal
That sounds like a kiss
This is the hi hat
When you step on it
It sounds like a kiss
Smack smack smack
Kiss kiss kiss

No one knows
No one knows anything
No one knows
No one knows really

This is the symbol
That looks like a kiss
This is the letter X
When you write or type it
It stands for a kiss
XXX
Kiss kiss kiss

There is no word
That feels like a kiss
There's no symbol for that
Kiss is the only word that comes close
Kiss comes closer than anything else
And if you say it enough times
You forget what it means
And if you do it enough times
Well, then your mouth gets tired
But some people you never get tired of talking to
Some people you can say nothing at all
Track Name: Progress
When I was little
When I was a child
I couldn't wait to be seven
Didn't want to be five
There were girls and jokes
I couldn't get yet
The jokes aloof
The girls were over my head

So easily done
That it couldn't be taught
Don't be embarrassed
Don't give it a thought
She pulled up in a lay by
Near my house
She undid her seatbelt
But she did not get out

And it was so slow

Somewhere to get to
Somewhere to go
I'm taking the train
Not a bus or a boat
Leaving from Paddington
Feels so grand
Like your journey matters
And a change is at hand

This country's good
But it's not mine
Old red blood
On a new brown sign
Purple gorse
On a mountainside
We can walk
We can make great strides

And it was so slow.
